YORKSHIRE ROAD TRIP

Yorkshire is made for road trips. Big skies, rolling countryside, proper market towns and some of the finest food stops in the country all stitched together by beautifully scenic roads. This itinerary begins in York and takes you on a relaxed yet rewarding journey through some of the county’s most iconic stops. Use it as inspiration, or follow it wheel for wheel.

York to Harrogate

Begin in the historic city of York, where ancient walls, cobbled streets and the magnificent Minster set the tone. After a leisurely morning exploring the city, head west towards Harrogate, one of Yorkshire’s most refined towns. A visit to Bettys Café Tea Rooms is almost compulsory. Expect immaculate service, tiered cake stands and classic Yorkshire baking done to perfection. Just outside Harrogate, Weeton’s is another excellent stop, ideal for stocking up on fine foods, artisan produce and picnic essentials for the road ahead.

Harrogate to Ripon

Leaving Harrogate, the landscape opens into gentle countryside as you travel north to Ripon. While the city itself is charming, the real highlight lies just beyond at Fountains Abbey. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the best preserved Cistercian monasteries in Europe. Set within a dramatic valley and surrounded by landscaped gardens and deer park, it is a place that feels both grand and deeply peaceful. Allow time to explore properly. It is one of Yorkshire’s true showstoppers.

Ripon to Masham

From Ripon, continue on to Masham, a classic Yorkshire market town with a proud brewing heritage. Black Sheep Brewery is a must visit. Founded by Paul Theakston, it represents the independent spirit of Yorkshire brewing. Whether you take a tour, enjoy a tasting, or simply sit down with a pint, it is a rewarding and very local experience.

Masham to Ilkley

The route south towards Ilkley is a pleasure in itself, passing open moorland, stone walls and wide views. Ilkley is known for its spa heritage and its dramatic setting beneath Ilkley Moor. After a walk along the River Wharfe or a short climb for the views, return to civilisation with another visit to Bettys, this time in one of its most picturesque locations.

Going Further

If you wish to extend the journey, head to Saltaire, the beautifully preserved Victorian model village near Bradford. The Salt Mill is the highlight, home to an outstanding collection of David Hockney’s work. Art, architecture and industrial history combine here to create a memorable final stop.
